TEAM BLISS

Spring 2010 Merit Scholarship

Application and Directions 


 

1.  Team Bliss Merit Scholarships are awarded to eligible applicants planning to enroll or enrolled in two-year college (resident or online), four-year college or university (resident or online) or vocational school in accordance with the rules and regulations established herein. Team Bliss Scholarships are for spouses and children of active-duty or retired service members of any rank whose sponsor lives, or is assigned, in the Fort Bliss area.  These scholarships are sponsored by the Fort Bliss Officer, Civilian & Spouse Association (FBOCSA).  Applications will be reviewed anonymously by a special Selection Committee, based on the student’s academic record, job record, volunteer work, participation in community-based activities, letters of recommendation and a brief essay.  Financial need is not considered.

  

2. Scholarships will be awarded in each of three categories. Minimum awards will be $1,000. 

    Team Bliss – immediate family member of an active-duty or retired service member of any rank

          (1) Team Bliss High School Senior 
          (2) Team Bliss College Student 
          (3) Team Bliss Spouse   

3. Rules:

      a. ***Active duty and retired service members are NOT eligible to apply for Team Bliss scholarships. ****

      b. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5.

      c. Applicants who receive full-tuition scholarships or appointments to attend a service academy must withdraw their application and forfeit any Team Bliss Scholarship award.

    d. An applicant may apply in only one scholarship category per application year. 

    e. No applicant may receive a total of more than two Team Bliss scholarships from the FBOCSA Scholarship Fund.  The scholarships may be in any combination of categories. 

4. Recipients of merit scholarships will be notified by May 15, 2010 of their award and invited to a scholarship award presentation hosted by the FBOCSA. 

5.   Funding procedures

      a. Scholarship awards will be mailed directly for deposit in the student's tuition account IAW the educational institution's scholarship process.

      b. Final disposition of merit scholarship monies will be made by August 1, 2010, and must be used by May 31, 2011, or the money will be returned to FBOCSA. 

6.  Deadline: The completed application and all supporting documents must be postmarked by midnight April 2, 2010 to be considered. Applications can be completed using word-processing programs. Handwritten applications are highly discouraged.

Spring 2010 MERIT SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION FORM 

Application Instructions 

All Applicants Must Submit:

  • A photocopy of both sides of the applicant’s valid Uniformed Services ID and front of sponsor’s military ID
  • Official high school or college/university transcript(s), as applicable. Transcripts must be mailed directly from the educational institution or should have the official registrar’s unbroken seal on the envelope. Unofficial transcripts or copies will NOT be accepted.
  • Completed scholarship application (6 pages, including essay)
  • Completed Volunteer Verification
  • Two (2) sealed letters of recommendation completed by persons unrelated to you who will attest to your motivation, character, and integrity. Must be mailed directly by the recommender and at least one should be from a teacher, mentor or academic advisor.


 

General:

  •  All application materials must be postmarked by midnight, April 2, 2010.
  •  Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5.
  •  The application should be filled out using a word-processing program and printed for submission.  Handwritten applications are HIGHLY DISCOURAGED.

 
 
 
Scholarship Category: Check appropriate box 
 Team Bliss High School Senior (for 2008 high school graduates) - Applicant’s parent/guardian/sponsor must be an active-duty service member assigned to, or retired service member living in the Fort Bliss area. Applicant must be planning to attend the educational program full time.
 Team Bliss College Student (for students currently in at least their second year of college) - Applicant’s parent/guardian/sponsor must be an active-duty service member assigned to, or retired service member living in the Fort Bliss area. Applicant must be enrolled in the educational program full time.
 Team Bliss Spouse - Applicant must be the spouse of an active-duty service member assigned to, or retired service member living in the Fort Bliss area. Applicants may be enrolled part time and may be either starting or continuing their education.

Reference Letters
Two letters of recommendation are required.  One of the letters should be from a school faculty member who is familiar with your academic performance. The second should be from a work supervisor, or supervisor from a volunteer or extracurricular activity. Faculty recommendations must be on institution letterhead.  Distance learning students may submit two professional/character references if they are not able to obtain a faculty recommendation. References should state the source of personal knowledge and comment on your leadership, service, achievement and character.  Each letter of recommendation must be signed and sent directly to FBOCSA by the person making the recommendation. I understand that all applications will be evaluated on educational achievement, related activities, and the essay submission, and that scholarships will be awarded based on merit.  Submission of an application in no way guarantees that a scholarship will be awarded.  I understand that my application will not be considered if it is incomplete or submitted after the April 2, 2010 deadline.
